I used to be a traveling teacher across the 12 North Alabama counties and I can say that the only good *commercial* bbq that I have had in North Alabama was at very small bbq places. There is one in Florence/Mussel Shoals AL - Bunyan's - that has not only fantastic bbq but the most amazing hot mustard slaw that I've ever had. If you ever want to make a hellofa trek, go there. It's two hours from where I live now but whenever I'm in the area (even remotely) I stop by. There is another place that I go whenever I can get there when they're open and that is Character's bbq in Adairsville. Get the ribs, get 'em wet and thank me later. Oh yes, get extra sauce too....it's good on everything!

Character's has been on my to-do list for a really long time now, actually. One day, I'll be at that exit at the same time that he's open.

Hi Grant,
That's the problem that we have. We typically drive up to Atlanta on Friday night and w/the time change we never make it. When we drive back to AL on Sunday he's closed too. It makes it so special when we can leave early enough to get there and get the ribs, chicken, brisket or pork. I love it all and I know that there are sauce snobs but this stuff would make rocks taste good. Not too thick and sweet but a little spicy and thin. It lets the flavor shine through and cuts through the fat of the pork a bit. Give it a try one day!

Would you believe we drove past his place tonight (Saturday) on our way back from Henegar AL, saw his lights out, shook fists and continued on to the interstate...
