Holy Crap! You were about 3 miles from our house! If you find anything that you like that well at Gibson's, let me know and the next time that we come to ATL (usually every weekend or so) I'll bring it to you. I'm not a huge fan of Gibson's (although if you can get past the smell of the old people) except for the breakfast. Hell, half of Huntsville's over 70 crowd eats there for breakfast and they've still got waitresses that have been working there since before I was born in the 60's. Brunswick stew is a magical thing when made well. I loosely use "Chowings Brunswick stew" recipe when I make it, but I add a lot of smoked pork and WAY more onions than they call for. You can stand a spoon, fork or whatever up in mine! Pleased to see that you got to HSV, enjoy!

By the way, the first weekend in May is the BBQ festival in Huntsville. You might want to check out the "Basting Barristers" in the shade tree division. The guy who heads it up, Mark Craig, has won 1st place over and over for his chicken. The nazi heath dept won't let folks pay to eat the contestants' entrees but if you bring a bottle of Jack, I'm certain that you will be welcomed in their midst.
:)
Fun time had by ALL! Hide the booze on the way in if you're coming. The contestants can hide theirs in their coolers.
:)
Not that I would know, mind you.........

I'd love to see more of Huntsville, but we'll be in Memphis the first week of May instead. When we do spend some more time in Huntsville one day, we'll try some non-Gibson's BBQ.

Actually, now that I think about your vivid description of Gibson's, it reminds me more and more of Atlanta's Old Hickory House. Both definitely seem like places that are getting by on goodwill and nostalgia.

Be sure to add New Market Bar-B-Q to the top of your list for BBQ joints to visit the next time you come to Huntsville. We are located 20 minutes from downtown Huntsville in NE Madison County in the historic small town of New Market. Check out our FB page to read what our customers are saying about our food. We'd love to meet you. Thanks! Libby Webb (www.facebook.com/newmarketbbq)

Ok, I'm going to try the New Market BBQ. It's right out there by the airport (if I recall correctly) and I drive past it frequently. I hope that you have great bbq and good sauce.....I'll report back!
