Years and years ago! I stopped at the one in White Plains once, loving the sawdust floor, but I think I just had a sandwich to go and didn't try the stew. It's been on the to-do list for a return visit for a really long time.
Yours is a neat site, Don. I have family in Paintsville KY, and taking US-23 from Asheville that way has been a notion we might see through one of these days. Thanks for writing!

Given your comments on the stew, I am curious if you've ever been to Holcomb's in Greensboro or White Plains and tried theirs.

It's an almost 2 hr drive for me, but it's worth it for the stew, in my humble opinion. We always pick up a gallon on the way to visit my dad nearby.
Thanks for the detailed review. This is just the type of place, open since the 1930s, that I like to let my readers know about.
