I grew up in Birmingham and now live in Marietta. I am a fan of all the great downtown Hot Dog joints mentioned, as well as Brandi's World Famous in Marietta. Brandi's spicy chili sauce is amazing... wish my Birmingham friends could taste it.
Birminham's addiction to hot dogs with sauce is based on the slim places between buildings where these men began serving up delicious, almost instantaneous lunch. My favorite of those was probably Pete's Famous, but al were good. My true favorite is Gus's in Crestline. The current owner has retained their original sauce...a touch richer and somehow more sweet and savory at the same time.
In any case, I love the Birmingham culture of sauce in fast food. If anyone has another favorite, I know I would probably enjoy it as well. Just to make the point, try a Milo's Hamburger...with their sauce!
